Jerry Montgomery, global chief human resources officer, and Roger Frizzell, chief communications officer, will be retiring from Carnival Corp. & plc this fall after assisting the transition of their successors.

Montgomery, who's led HR at Carnival for 11 years, will be replaced by Bettina Deynes from Carnival Cruise Line, effective Oct. 1. At the same time Frizzell, head of communications the past nine years, will be succeeded by Jody Venturoni, a founding partner of the communications agency LDWW that services Carnival Corp.

Adjusted reporting structure

In other Carnival Corp. changes, CEO Josh Weinstein adjusted his direct reports. Previously, as chief operations officer, he split reports with former CEO Arnold Donald so some reorganization was expected with the COO position going away.

Going forward, Greg Sullivan, chief information officer, and Jon McKeown, chief procurement officer, will report to CFO David Bernstein, while Corrado Sala, SVP group strategy, will report to Renata Ribeiro, SVP strategic operations.

Weinstein's direct reports are Bernstein, General Counsel Rick Miguez, Chief Maritime Officer Bill Burke, Chief Risk & Compliance Officer Richard Brilliant, Ribeiro, Venturoni and Deynes, along with Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy, Holland America Group President Jan Swartz and Costa Group CEO Michael Thamm.

As well, Weinstein will continue to represent Carnival UK on the leadership team, with Carnival UK President Sture Myrmell reporting to him, as before.

Tandy Bondi, SVP government relations, and Marie McKenzie, VP government and destination affairs, will report to Miguez.

Global chief human resources officer

Announcing the global human resources transition, Weinstein credited Jerry Montgomery as being instrumental in helping attract and retain key talent talent and facilitating the global coordination of various HR initiatives. Montgomery's also active on boards including The Biltmore Co. and the Dean's Advisory Council of Florida International University's Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

He will stay on through year's end to help Bettina Deynes take over as global chief HR officer.

Deynes has been chief HR officer at Carnival Cruise Line since 2019 and supported the company 'during a time of unprecedented organizational challenges,' Weinstein said.

She has more than 20 years in management and HR, having served as chief HR officer and strategy officer for the Society for Human Resource Management while also acting as a voting member of the US delegation for the International Organization for Standardization for the development of international HR standards. Earlier positions included VP of HR for the Washington Nationals baseball team and chief HR officer for the city of Alexandria, Virginia.

Chief communications officer

Roger Frizzell is retiring after 'outstanding work for the company during the past nine years,' in Weinstein's words, during which he helped elevate Carnival Corp.'s standing with the media and raise the profile of the brands, as well as 'expertly managing' PR responses 'through many volatile situations over the last decade.'

Capping a career working for such blue-chip brands as AT&T, HP, American Airlines and PG&E as well as Carnival, Frizzell called Carnival 'my dream job,' saying he had the opportunity to work with 'some of the finest leaders on the planet in an amazing industry.' Before Carnival, he led the international PR campaign to return wrestling — his sport — into the Olympic Games. And, having coached many athletes over the years, he may do more of this in the future, 'maybe even a grandchild or two.'

But first Frizzell will help Jody Venturoni through a two-month transition and then provide her counsel for an interim period.

Venturoni brings more than 30 years' experience in public relations and communications and has been a senior executive in both agency and corporate roles. She is a founding partner of LDWW after serving as EVP at Hill & Knowlton and president of Weber Shandwick’s Southwest operation, where she worked with brands including AT&T, Amazon, Carnival, Omni Hotels, Verizon, General Motors, Windstar, Sprint and others.

In her Carnival job, Venturoni will also oversee Linda Coll and the Carnival Foundation activities.

New chief of staff Aubrie Brake

In another move, Weinstein appointed Aubrie Brake to a newly created role as his chief of staff. Brake, an attorney, started with Carnival in 2013 in environmental policy and served as director of corporate environmental compliance before becoming ethics and compliance chief of staff in 2021.
