After 42 years working at Wärtsilä, the last 30 of which have been exclusively in the cruise sector, Fred Danska retired as director, cruise on September 1.

Danska who has an MSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering started his professional career in 1978 working at the shipyard in his home town.

During his time with Wartsila he worked mostly in sales oriented disciplines but also in corporate and quality development. Ten of the years were spent working in the US.

Danska has travelled the world promoting his company’s environmental solutions as well as emphasising the Total Lifecycle Cost approach in evaluating investments.

LNG virtues

He was among the first to extol the virtues of LNG as an environmentally friendly solution for cruise ships when it was still in its infancy.

Danska received the Seatrade Cruise Outstanding Achievement Award in 2018. On the occasion one of his closest colleagues said of him: ‘He is truly a cruise man with strong belief in this market. Knowing him for several years, he has always had time to give a helping hand and advice to people in various parts of this ecosystem, typically starting with a story to break the ice.

Maikel Arts succeeds Danska as Director Cruise at Wärtsilä.
