A frantic sea and air search for a passenger who went overboard from P&O Cruises Australia’s Pacific Explorer ended in tragedy
A young woman drowned after going over the side of Pacific Explorer Tuesday evening during a four-night round-trip to Kangaroo Island from Melbourne.

The woman was reported missing around midnight on Tuesday and the 1,998-passenger ship immediately began a search of the area.

Air search

A search and rescue aircraft was sent to the search zone by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority Response Centre, with two helicopters joining the search at day break.

A Carnival Australia spokesperson confirmed the passenger was found dead.

Travelling with a family member

She was travelling with a family member who received care and assistance from shipboard staff.

‘As you can appreciate, this has also deeply impacted our remaining guests and crew,’ the spokesperson said.

‘We thank all involved who supported this distressing and challenging operation.

‘Relevant authorities have been advised and we will continue to work with them and provide any assistance required.’

The visit to Kangaroo Island was aborted and Pacific Explorer headed back to Melbourne.
