Virgin Voyages elevates Michelle Bentubo to chief operating officer
Virgin Voyages promoted Michelle Bentubo to chief operating officer, a new position that oversees all operations including marine and technical functions.
October 5, 2023
Bentubo was a founding member of Virgin Voyages and most recently served as SVP service excellence, travel operations, crew training and experience.
She had joined the line in 2016 as VP technology and operations, involved in identifying, designing and implementing the technology framework required for both shipboard and shoreside teams. She also helped drive digital experience, encompassing everything from the interactive Sailor App to the in-cabin tablets that can control mood lighting, air conditioning and television.
Bentubo then took on leadership of customer service, terminal operations and people and culture organizations, shaping the brand’s service and culture philosophy. Lately she has been leading all activities for Virgin Voyages' sailors, from booking to boarding.
She came to Virgin following executive roles at Bank of America, Walt Disney World and Disney Cruise Line.
Critical role
'I’m thrilled to have Michelle take on this critical role for us at this important time in our growth plans. Having her become our COO is brilliant news for the entire team and our business given how she’s been such an important part of building and creating our brand,' CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu said. He added that Bentubo is a 'leadership mentor for all our crew, especially our future women leaders.'
Responsibilities
As COO, Bentubo will be overseeing every touchpoint of the brand’s end-to-end operations, including service delivery, port functionality, marine and technology, customer service, digital platforms, change management and business transformation.
Bentubo also leads Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Squad, a program dedicated to recruiting, supporting and mentoring female talent across operations and preparing them for future leadership positions.
The line recently got a $550m capital infusion from Ares Management, Bain Capital and Virgin Group, delayed the entry into service of fourth ship Brilliant Lady and laid out new itineraries and ports.
