Cruise operations unaffected by La Palma wildfire
Cruise ships continue to call at La Palma even as a wildfire rages on the Spanish island.
Canarian Ports CEO Manuel Ortega told Seatrade Cruise News ports are unaffected. ‘The fire is located in the high mountains, quite far from the ports, and their cities and highways,’ he said.
Ortega went on to say ‘the fire in La Palma is subsiding in intensity’ with the expectation that it will be brought under control today or tomorrow.
Cruise calls unaffected
Calls remain unaffected by the disaster, which began early Saturday in El Pinar in the northwestern municipality of Puntagorda before spreading south towards Tijarafe, prompting thousands of people to evacuate.
Spanish President Pedro Sánchez said on Twitter that ‘all the necessary means’ to suppress the flames would be at the disposal of La Palma's authorities. The BBC reports that the blaze has already consumed 4,500 ha of land and at least a dozen homes.
The incident comes as heat wave Cerberus grips Spain and other parts of Europe, including Italy, Greece and France.
