Detroit Port Day features Ocean Navigator visit, jobs fair to follow

The Detroit Riverwalk event celebrating the return of Great Lakes cruises was hosted by the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority wih the help of the Detroit Historical Society, Visit Detroit and American Queen Voyages.

Hundreds of visitors along the Detroit Riverwalk learned about cruising, heard boat-themed music and danced with Detroit Tigers’ mascot Paws. Port Authority Executive Director Mark Schrupp described the event as a 'tremendous success that helped further our mission to bring awareness of the benefits of the Great Lakes to our community and local economy.'

American Queen Voyages spokesman Mike Hicks thanked the Port Authority for an 'incredible day in Detroit with a wonderful group of elected officials and community leaders sharing a unified passion for the city and committed to Great Lakes cruising.'

Aug. 20 maritime careers and job fair

Detroit's next Port Day is set for Aug. 20 and will highlight maritime careers shipboard and dockside, including a job fair.

Workers will learn how to obtain tuition free training for union jobs through the Seafarers’ International Union as well as work in local terminals, like the Port Authority’s general cargo dock.

American Queen Voyages' Hicks said his company will be there to recruit Detroiters to work on their ships and riverboats throughout the country.
