The customary plaque exchange took place on board the ship at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal involving the ship's master, Capt. Diego Michelozzi, and Capt. Zeita Merchant, commanding officer of the US Coast Guard Sector New York.

‘We are very proud to bring our extraordinary new ship, Explora I, to New York City,’ stated Michael Ungerer, CEO, Explora Journeys. ‘New York City is one of the most important destinations in the Northeastern US and it is an honour to showcase our highly anticipated new ship and luxury experience in the North American market.

‘Our team has worked tirelessly to push the boundaries of innovation and excellence to create a product that we are thrilled for guests to see when they embark in New York City,’ he continued.

East Coast US and Canada

Explora I commenced its inaugural East Coast US and Canada voyage following the maiden call in New York. The ship will call at Boston, Massachusetts in the US and Saint John, Bay of Fundy and Quebec City in Canada. The vessel will then operate two additional seven-night journeys along the East Coast of the US and Canada, before heading to Miami, Florida for the start of the Caribbean season.

‘Throughout these journeys, our guests will experience the authentic and bespoke experiences offered by Explora Journeys,’ remarked Ungerer. He highlighted the cruise line’s ‘best-in-class service, exquisite onboard offerings and immersive destination experiences.’ He added, ‘A balanced blend of on- and off-the-beaten-path destinations will allow our guests on Explora I to indulge in authentic cultural experiences and a slower pace of travel, leaving them rejuvenated and inspired.’

Explora I

Explora I, which first set sail in July, is the first of six ships built for Explora Journeys. Explora II will enter service in summer 2024 and operate in the Mediterranean Sea and the Middle East until April 2025. Explora III and Explora IV will both be LNG-powered and enter service in 2026 and 2027, respectively. Explora V will enter service in 2027 followed by Explora VI in 2028, and both vessels will be powered by hydrogen.
