Galveston cruise terminal groundbreaking set for Aug. 20

The Port of Galveston plans an Aug. 20 official groundbreaking ceremony and reveal of its $151m cruise terminal complex going in at Pier 16.

This, the port's fourth cruise terminal, will be home to MSC Seascape, with opening scheduled for November 2025.

Galveston is converting a cargo warehouse into a 165,000-square-foot cruise terminal, a $96m project including pier work, two passenger boarding bridges and ground transportation areas, and building a $55m parking garage for approximately 1,700 vehicles.

Construction has already begun but the event will reveal details of the facilities.

VIP attendees expected

Expected attendees include Galveston Port Director/CEO Rodger Rees; Rick Sasso, chairman of MSC Cruises USA; US Rep. Randy Weber, Galveston Mayor Craig Brown, Galveston Wharves Chairman Vic Pierson and Jason Park, SVP government affairs and managing director of North America, Cruise Lines International Association.

Galveston recently sold $156.8m in 10-year municipal bonds at 5% in an oversubscribed offering to finance the new facility.
