Genting Dream becomes largest vessel to call alongside in Phuket
Genting Dream yesterday became the first cruise ship over 150,000gt ever to go alongside at Phuket Deep Sea Port.
While in port, a celebration was held onboard the 150,695gt vessel to mark the occasion. In attendance were members of Resorts World Cruises management, including capt. Havard Ramsoy, SVP, fleet operations; Jerry Leong, SVP business development and ports; and Genting Dream captains Jukka Silvennoinen and Robert Bodin, who welcomed the deputy governor of Phuket, Adul Chuthong, and the local authorities for a special presentation.
Safety and feasibility studies
‘Our marine operations team, the captains of Genting Dream together with the Phuket pilots, have conducted comprehensive studies, risk assessments and ship simulations over half a year with the Thailand authorities to ensure the feasibility and safety of this pioneering initiative,’ explained Michael Goh, president of Resorts World Cruises.
According to Resorts World, by adding a cruise terminal at Phuket Deep Sea Port, the berthing of a large cruise ship like Genting Dream would create new opportunities for the destination and cruise line to explore possibilities in the future. This could include, for instance, Phuket being a gateway for cruise passengers to embark Genting Dream, therefore spurring the growth of tourism locally and regionally.
Elevating Phuket’s position
‘With our ship now able to berth alongside Phuket Deep Sea Port regularly, our passengers will enjoy the convenience, which will further boost Phuket’s image as a cruise destination,’ Goh said.
He went on to thank the local marine department, the governor of Phuket province, local port authorities, as well as Wallem Shipping Agency ‘for their support and coordination.’
Itineraries
Phuket features on Genting Dream’s three-night voyage from Singapore, departing on alternate Tuesdays.
The line offers a variety of other itineraries from Singapore, including a three-night Penang-Kuala Lumpur cruise and a two-night Kuala Lumpur and two-night high seas weekend getaway cruise.
Alternatively, passengers can embark from Kuala Lumpur (via Port KLang) to join a four-night Singapore discovery cruise or for a three-night cruise from Singapore to Penang.
