Cruise industry advances in sustainability were in the spotlight this week at the inaugural GreenPort Oceania Congress held in Newcastle.

Cruise Lines International Association Australasia MD Joel Katz outlined the multibillion-dollar investments cruise lines are making in new ships and new technologies to achieve carbon-neutral cruising worldwide by 2050.

Shore power at White Bay

The event also highlighted the Port Authority of New South Wales’ project to supply sustainable shore power for ships berthing at Sydney’s White Bay Cruise Terminal.

‘This is an important opportunity to reinforce our industry partnerships and to unite our region around the sustainability challenges of the future,’ Katz told maritime leaders from the region’s cruise, port and shipping communities.

‘Cruise lines are putting enormous resources into achieving zero-carbon cruising, but success will also depend on strong partnerships with ports, shipyards, suppliers, government and other sectors of the global maritime industry,’ he said.

Carnival Australia panellist

Katz chaired a panel discussion, which included Carnival Australia’s Chief Strategy and External Affairs Officer Teresa Lloyd, on the sustainability advances underway in the world’s ports.
