Jamaica plans to modernize Ocho Rios' Reynolds Pier

'We've recognized the port is not cruise-friendly and not ready for the next-generation cruise ships,' said William Tatham, vp cruise shipping for the port authority, referring to vessels in the 140,000gt to 160,000gt range.

Permission has been obtained to create more space for ground services and to enhance the pier itself, Tatham told Seatrade Insider. International consultants have been engaged to assess alternatives.

This project comes as the Jamaica Port Authority completes upgrades to the Ocho Rios cruise terminal and tours staging area that should be ready for the start of this winter's season. Also under way are phased improvements to ease pedestrian access to Ocho Rios, the craft market, beach and beyond, expected to be completed in early 2015.
