New Zealand’s national cruise strategy for the next 16 years
The New Zealand Cruise Association released the first national cruise strategy to the year 2040.
CEO Jacqui Lloyd said it was developed through extensive collaboration with industry professionals, regional representatives, ports, cruise lines, government agencies and other key stakeholders over the past 12 months.
Workshop feedback
Lloyd said feedback from a workshop at the NZCA 2022 annual conference highlighted the need for a coordinated approach to cruise growth and development in the country.
The strategy sets a long-term course for the future toward the 2040 vision of a visitor focused cruise sector.
Lloyd will give an update on the strategy at the New Zealand Cruise Association’s annual conference in Auckland on August 15.
Vital step
Cruise Lines International Association Australasia MD Joel Katz hailed the cohesive approach of involving government, industry, destinations and other stakeholders as ‘a vital step towards long-term prosperity and positive tourism management in New Zealand.’
Katz said overcoming regulatory complexities and high operating costs are challenges to be faced.
‘Thousands of New Zealand jobs are supported by cruise tourism, which spreads economic benefits far beyond the major gateways to reach regional destinations right around the country,’ he said.
He said CLIA is pleased to partner with the NZCA to deliver an economic impact analysis for New Zealand later this year.
