Last year, the final two months saw 14 overnight stays. This year, by the first week of December, that number had already been matched. December will see 34 overnight stops with Christmas and New Year’s Eve stay overs popular.

‘For us, at the Port of Funchal, this is a strategic priority—not only in terms of revenue, as overnights generate more fees, but also in promoting the destination itself,’ explained Paula Cabaço, chair of APRAM’s Board of Directors.

She emphasized the benefits these overnight stays bring to the city, such as a stronger economic impact and increased engagement with the local community.

Economic benefit boost

According to information gathered from lines, about 80% of passengers and crew from overnighting cruise ships go out at night to explore and enjoy the city. ‘This translates into greater benefits for sectors like dining, retail, and cultural and leisure activities,’ noted Cabaço. She added, ‘The longer stays encourage deeper connections with the city, strengthening the bond between the port and the community.’

Cabaço highlighted that both the port infrastructure and APRAM’s human resources are well-equipped to meet this market trend, which they aim to further enhance. Next year, APRAM plans to intensify its promotional efforts with cruise companies, showcasing Madeira’s main attractions and the variety of its offerings.

‘The short distance between the port and the city is undoubtedly a key factor in encouraging cruise lines to extend their stay in Funchal, allowing passengers to enjoy the city by night,’ concluded Paula Cabaço.
