Progreso pier is one for the Guinness record book

Mexico's Port of Progreso officially has the world's longest jetty/pier — 8,018.98 meters/26,309 feet — according to Guinness World Records.

A Guinness adjudicator presented the record certificate at a ceremony hosted in July by Progreso Mayor Julian Zacarias in time for Progreso's 152nd anniversary celebration.

Giant letters proclaiming 'El Muelle más largo del Mundo' (The Longest Pier in the World) now stand on the boardwalk, providing a photo opportunity for cruise visitors.

According to the Port of Progreso's August cruise newsletter, the pier was first built in 1872 as a wooden structure. It reached its current length by the end of the 1980s upon the completion of two modernization and renovation projects.

Seatrade meeting led to this world spotlight

At the Guinness certificate presentation, attended by local, state and federal officials, Mayor Zacarias said the distinction was possible 'thanks to the efforts we made together with the state government during the recent Seatrade meeting, which today are giving results and allow us to put Progreso in the world's spotlight.'
