Projects at Barcelona port shift up a gear

A number of these relate to the America's Cup sailing championship events in August through October 2024. Among them will be the completion of MSC Cruises' dedicated cruise terminal, the sixth facility on Moll Adossat pier. Royal Caribbean has also announced its intention to add what would be a seventh cruise terminal, part of its new partnership with iCon Infrastructure Partners. 

Traffic in 2022

Some 2.33m passengers were recorded by Barcelona last year, 25.8% below the 3.14m figure documented in 2019. The MedCruise member port aims to attract more pre- and post-cruise passengers and smooth out the seasonality of sailings.

Port revenue was €181m in 2022, 5% more than 2020, its record year. Cash flow from operations reached €101m. Long-term bank debt was reduced by €18m, leaving €231m in the port's treasury. 

Barcelona Port Authority (APB) pointed out this number shows financial stability for major projects in the near future, including energy transition, electrification of harbour services, development of improved railway links, a total investment of €4m in a 5G network and €5.6m in other telecoms.  

Barcelona’s LNG installations are among the highest-capacity facilities in Europe, 'strategic for the supply of this fuel for the continent,' according to APB, and for LNG-powered cruise ships.
