A record 185 participants have gathered in Costa Brava this week for MedCruise’s 60th general assembly hosted by the ports of Palamos and Roses.

MedCruise President Figen Ayan welcomed port members and 22 cruise line executives from 18 brands to the GA on Tuesday evening at a reception at the Hotel de la Gavina, located on the Mediterranean shores near Girona.

Smoother sailing

‘After two years of navigating relentlessly through rough seas, the cruise industry — one of the sectors of tourism hardest hit by the pandemic — is showing us that a better future and smoother sailing is ahead. The record participation of members and cruise lines to our major event is a proof of it,’ she said.

‘Normally our general assembly brings together around 80 to 100 participants, this week we will have 185 persons attending to our general assembly plus 12 international media representatives and 11 national press who are with us to discover the situation of the cruise industry but also the special region of Costa Brava,’ she added.

60,000 passengers flock to Costa Brava

Isidre Gavín, president of Ports of the Generalitat noted ‘Costa Brava’s cruise ports have 24 years’ expertise in welcoming ships and passengers.

'This year the season runs from April to November and we forecast breaking a record with 60,000 passengers in Costa Brava,' he added.

Of these, 60% are US brand ships, the rest European, and he estimated this will bring 5.4m to Costa Brava.

‘We advocate for sustainable growth… we advocate for a sustainable framework’, Gavin commented.
