On the eve of its 95th birthday, the 64-passenger windjammer built by Marjorie Merriweather Post and E.F. Hutton as Hussar in 1931 will sail in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Canary Islands and the Atlantic before its docking at a yard to be determined.

The update and restoration will be overseen by Sea Cloud Cruises Managing Director and Chief Technical Officer Adam Pazdzioch, who led Sea Cloud's last major refurbishment and repairs dry dock in 2010.

Pazdzioch also oversaw the newbuild team for Sea Cloud II and served as project manager during Sea Cloud Spirit's construction.

'Sea Cloud is a majestic vessel and continues to leave those who step onboard her in awe, dating back to the days of her original owner Marjorie Merriweather Post and American designers Cox & Stevens,' Pazdzioch said. 'It is an honor to serve as her caretaker through this upcoming dry dock as our team painstakingly prepares her for continued service well beyond her 100th birthday.'

2025 special events

Throughout 2025, passengers sailing on Sea Cloud and fleet-mates Sea Cloud II and Sea Cloud Spirit can anticipate special shipboard and shoreside events themed on the original vessel.

'We will celebrate Sea Cloud’s legacy and traditions on all our ships throughout the year before awaiting her triumphant return to service,' said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruises North America.

Among the shoreside events is 'Setting Sail: The story of Sea Cloud,' at the Hillwood Estate Museum & Gardens — Post's former home in Washington, DC — Feb. 15-June 15, 2025.

Before then, next month curator Thomas Wu will be aboard Sea Cloud during its 10-night Piraeus to Venice cruise (July 19-29) as he catalogs artifacts, reviews ship documents and interviews officers and crew. Wu also will deliver two talks, one about the history of Sea Cloud and the exhibition, and the other on Post's life, houses and collection.
