Extensive Norwegian Dawn drydock nears completion

The work has included the addition of 28 suites and 30 other accommodations, a Brazilian steak house emulating Moderno Churrascaria on Norwegian Epic, the relocation of the Spinnaker Lounge and the addition of flat-screen televisions in all accommodations.

The refurbishment resembles that of Norwegian Star last year, which NCL president and ceo Kevin Sheehan said had been very well received.

The 58 new accommodations will be available beginning on the Sept. 16 sailing. Among them are four deluxe owner’s suites, 14 family suites, 10 family suites with balcony and 18 inside rooms. Most of the family accommodations sleep six people each.

Moderno Churrascaria replaces Salsa, the Tex Mex restaurant.

The gift shop, art gallery, photo gallery, conference center, Spinnaker Lounge and Blue Lagoon Restaurant were relocated and are fully renovated. Enhancements to the Dawn Club Casino included a new layout, fixed furniture and carpet.

The Kid’s Crew and Teen Club were fully renovated to provide a more versatile layout and cater to the range of ages and interests.

Updates include new game systems, activities and sound and light.

There will also be a room dedicated for the Under 2 Zoo where parents can accompany their children under 2 years old for age-appropriate activities.

Aesthetic improvements were made in the fitness area and Garden Café, while the atrium lobby was refreshed with new furniture in the Java Café and new plants.

Crew dining and recreation areas were completely refurbished, and flat-screen TVs were installed in crew cabins.

Technical modifications of the 2007-built ship include the replacement of one engine, new bearings for the port and starboard Azipods, new hull coating and the addition of a temperature-regulation system to reduce energy consumption.

Following its Boston season, Norwegian Dawn will reposition to Miami for 10- and 11-day Southern Caribbean itineraries through April 8, 2012.

This is the second of three NCL ship refurbishments planned this year. Norwegian Spirit is scheduled to enter drydock on Sept. 26. Work on Norwegian Sun was completed in March.
