There are just days to go before the doors of Hamburg Messe open to welcome attendees from across the globe to Seatrade Europe 2019 and the co-located MARINE INTERIORS Cruise & Ferry Global Expo, powered by SMM.
Sustainability and the environment are at the forefront of discussions at the Seatrade Europe conference taking place in Hamburg September 11-13.
CLIA Europe update
Michael Thamm, Chairman, CLIA Europe and Group Chief Executive Officer, Costa Group and Carnival Asia will lead the keynote session of the opening day and focus on the significant role Europe’s integrated cruise community is playing in the industry and how it can continue to drive across multiple platforms whilst facing the demands of changing legislation and other global and localised challenges.
State of the European Cruise Industry debate
A strong panel of industry personalities tackle the following State of the European Cruise Industry debate that include: Felix Eichhorn, President AIDA Cruises, Wybcke Meier, Chief Executive Officer, TUI Cruises GmbH; Gianni Onorato, CEO, MSC Cruises; Karl J. Pojer, Chief Executive Officer, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises; Gavin Smith, SVP of International, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd and Capt. Michael McCarthy, Chairman, Cruise Europe.
Another not to be missed session in the afternoon ‘Greener Cruising’ is set for 14.00 to 15.20 on September 11, sponsored by gmec, focusing on how the sector is committing to a more sustainable future. It also includes a European Cruise Environmental Regulatory Update.
There is also an interactive and captivating roundtable session where representatives from the port, city and destination community will participate in constructive and honest dialogue with cruise lines.
Industry expert Luis De Carvalho, CEO, Bermello Ajamil & Partners Europe, will chair this engaging session by examining two case studies which will be used during each roundtable discussion. The case studies for discussion are: Case Study 1: Case study 1: Top things to consider when establishing an effective cruise region and Case study 2: Destination management – could the Dubrovnik model be the future?
River Cruising
Will explore the opportunities and threats in the river cruising market including sustainable operations, crewing, new rivers and destinations and current rivership shipbuilding and design trends.
Small is beautiful
This session will dive into the latest trends in expedition and luxury cruising with a focus on smaller ships and niche products. It also considers how both large and small ports/destinations manage the passenger experience.

Two shows in one

With more than 100 exhibitors from 21 nations presenting design, as well as innovative technological solutions and a wide range of services, the event will provide access to the world’s leading suppliers in the sector of interior design, equipment and technology for passenger ships.
MARINE INTERIORS will be accompanied by a multifaceted conference programme: In three discussion panels, top-ranking architects, designers and decision-makers will highlight how safety requirements can be incorporated into the interior design of the on-board world in an aesthetically pleasing manner while reflecting the owner's brand identity. This will be exemplified by panellists like Kai Bunge, Managing Director of Partner Ship Design, who will elaborate on the new LNG-powered Costa Smeralda which sets a new standard in terms of sustainability, as well.
Designing for brand identity
In the conference ‘How design helps to convey, define or create brand identity’, David McCarthy, Marine Projects & Communications Director at the London-based design company AD Associates, and Tal Danai, CEO of Artlink, will report about their recent work. Other panelists include Nahal Kadora, assistant project head at Tillberg Design; Stefan Seidenfaden, Junior Partner from Partner Ship Design; and Trevor Young, Vice President, Newbuilding & Refurbishment at MSC.
The session ‘How to design to comply’ will discuss the challenges of producing aesthetically pleasing designs alongside regulatory limitations. Ioanna Kyriaku, Chief Architect for newbuilds at MSC, Andrea Brossa, Achitect at Jorio Design, Carl-Gustaf Rotkirch, CEO of Helsinki Shipyard Oy, and the Operations Manager – Passenger Ship Support at Lloyd's Register, Joep Bollerman, will also contribute their expertise.
European and Chinese cooperation
The Chinese Dialogue Forum is another highlight of the conference programme. It will focus on cooperation between Europe and China in cruise ship and RoPax ferry building. Guests will include Dr. Volkmar Wasmansdorff from Movena Group, and Zhang Leshang from China Class Society.
