The 2004-built Diamond Princess emerged enhanced and refreshed from an extensive 14-day, multimillion-dollar drydock in Singapore. The project continued Princess Cruises' 'Come Back New Promise,' a $450m fleetwide commitment.

Entertainment upgrades

Enhanced offerings include upgrades to the outdoor Movies Under the Stars giant screen with updated 7.1 surround-sound digital audio, and pool deck LED lighting enhancements for a more vibrant entertainment experience.

The casino was outfitted with new carpet, light fixtures and new flat-screen televisions. At The Lotus Spa & Fitness Center, the salon and treatment rooms were upgraded and fitted with the latest Precor fitness equipment.

Further general refurbishments included an upgraded digital audio system for the Princess Theatre, Explorers Lounge and Club Fusion, as well as new furnishings in the Horizon Court buffet area. Japanese bidets were added in the suites and public restrooms.

'The Japan cruises on board Diamond Princess have been a big hit amongst our guests in the region as they love to experience the culture, famous sites and local cuisine of Japan,' said Farriek Tawfik, director, Southeast Asia, Princess Cruises. The ship also provides closer-to-home departures which add to the convenience and ease for regional cruisers.

Seventh season from Yokohama and Kobe

This is the seventh season Princess has offered homeport voyages from Yokohama and Kobe that take passengers to far-flung destinations in Japan not easily accessed by land, Tawfik continued. Itineraries allow travelers to see the spring flowers, summer festivals and fall foliage.

New cruise-tour options

Plus, cruise-tour options were introduced this year that combine a cruise with more time on land. The 13- to 20-night packages pair a cruise with a land tour to iconic cities such as Kyoto and Tokyo.

Following the drydock, Diamond Princess has embarked on a 12-night sailing to Phu My, Nha Trang, Hong Kong, Taipei, Osaka and Shimizu (Mount Fuji) before returning to Yokohama for the 2019 Japan cruise season. Featured are 60 departures of 40 unique itineraries, visiting 41 destinations in seven countries.

Largest open-air Japanese bath at sea

Diamond Princess offers the largest open-air Japanese bath at sea, an 8,800-square-foot bath and garden complex, offering indoor and outdoor Japanese bathing experiences including steam rooms, saunas and hot tubs with ocean vistas. Passengers can experience Diamond’s distinctly Japanese offerings such as Kai Sushi, an authentic sushi bar, and traditional music and entertainment.
