A historic day for Yokohama

Diamond Princess called at Osanbashi pier, Norwegian Jewel called at Yamashita pier, which is used only on occasion, while Daikoku Cruise Terminal, which was officially opened April 19, received both MSC Splendida and Azamara Quest.

The vessels collectively brought an estimated 15,000 passengers to the Japanese port: 4,000 (2,000 embarking and disembarking) on Diamond Princess, 4,000 (2,000 and disembarking) on Norwegian Jewel, 1,200 (600 embarking and disembarking) on Azamara Quest and 6,000 (3,000 embarking and disembarking) on MSC Splendida.

190 ships visiting

Some 190 cruise calls are expected in Yokohama this year, compared to the 168 at Osanbashi and Daikoku last year.

Daikoku is notably suitable for the berthing of large ships and will be able to berth two mega ships concurrently in 2022.

According to Yokohama-Kawasaki International Port, 22 mega ships called at Daikoku last year with 27 expected this year.

New cruise terminal

Earlier this month, Yokohama inaugurated the opening of its first new cruise terminal in Daikoku during the visit of Queen Elizabeth. The facility consists of two terminals and one waiting hall totalling 5,000sq mtr.
