The Black Sea port city is undergoing major infrastructure development including the construction of a cruise and passenger terminal on a 600mtr long berth which was officially opened in late 2013.

The Maritime Station Burgas which can handle up to 3,000 cruise passengers a day and more than 300,000 passengers per year welcomed 27 cruise ships in 2014 and 41,762 passengers in a season starting in April and ending late November. Cruise line customers included Royal Caribbean,  Princess Cruises, Costa Crociere and MSC Cruises.

More than 30 cruise ships are booked for 2015.

During the ceremony to mark the opening of the public access zone, Bulgarian minister of transport Ivaylo Moskovski announced that the government is investing a further €6.1m in the Port of Burgas on a variety of projects including refurbishment of the breakwater and a Maritime Cultural Centre with museum, educational centre, conference and event halls, shops and leisure zone.
