The plan had faced fierce opposition from Royal Caribbean, whose headquarters are located at the port. Beckham's group had targeted waterfront acreage adjacent to the Royal Caribbean campus.

The Miami Herald reports county commissioners on Tuesday voted 11-1 against the stadium.

But there's still the possibility of a bayfront stadium near the port with Beckham's group looking at an unused pier area on the mainland near the American Airlines Arena, the home to Micky Arison's Miami Heat basketball franchise.
