Below the bustle of Amsterdam and above Rotterdam's smoke lies The Hague, the City by the Sea. The Hague is known for its Peace Palace, but overall the city is largely unexplored. You can walk or cycle freely between the historic buildings in the charming city centre, and who knows, you might even bump into the Dutch royal family. There are so many hidden treasures in The Hague! Thanks to these tips, you will know exactly why The Hague is more than worth a visit.

Stroll Through The Historic City Centre

The Hague's historic city centre is immersed in a royal atmosphere. Go for a quiet stroll and enjoy the many beautiful buildings. Walk along Noordeinde Palace, Binnenhof Palace, Kneuterdijk Palace, and the beautiful Lange Voorhout with the 5-star Hotel Des Indes: take in all the beauty that the city centre of The Hague has to offer.

Admire World-famous Masterpieces

Art lovers will not be disappointed by the world-famous masterpieces on display in The Hague: 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' in the Mauritshuis, Escher and the 'Victory Boogie Woogie' in the Kunstmuseum.

Insider Tip: Follow the Museum Route and cycle along the well-known museums and authentic markets. It doesn't get any more Dutch than this!

Walk Through The Courtyards

The Hague has more than 100 hidden courtyards: colourful gardens surrounded by small, cosy houses. As soon as you enter a courtyard, you step into an oasis of peace and get an idea of how the Hague residents used to live. It might be a good idea to take along a guide; some courtyards are so hidden that you might walk right past them on your own...

Discover The Netherlands...In One Day

Want to explore the Netherlands in just one day? In Madurodam you will be able to discover all the most beautiful and well-known landmarks thanks to hundreds of miniatures. Learn more about the history behind the miniatures and take part in various interactive activities.

Visit The Peace Palace

The most photographed building in The Hague is, without doubt, the Peace Palace. It houses the International Court of Justice, the only judicial organ of the United Nations outside New York, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Definitely, a must-visit.

Insider Tip: The Peace Palace borders the Scheveningen forest. Combine your visit to the Palace with a nice walk in the woods and blend in with the Dutch runners, cyclists, and playing children.

Soak Up The Luxurious Atmosphere

Would you like to get away from the well-known historical places and discover the luxurious and fashionable side of The Hague? The atmospheric streets of Denneweg and Noordeinde are absolute musts for lovers of design, art, lifestyle, and speciality shops. Grab a coffee to go and enjoy a leisurely stroll or have dinner in one of the many exclusive restaurants in the area.

Enjoy The Beach

The Hague has something that not many cities can match: 11 km of beach and Hollandse Duinen National Park, within easy reach by bike from the city centre and a stone's throw from the Seaport. An atmospheric harbour with lots of activities and restaurants. There are no less than 17 sustainable beach pavilions with a green key certificate where you can enjoy a barbecue with a sunset view. And last but not least: the fish here are fresher than fresh, straight from the sea!
