This was possible thanks to the downtime afforded by the global pause in cruise operations.

Shore power from renewable sources

Operating Europa 2 in port is virtually climate neutral; the 500-passenger ship requires only 2.2 MW of power per hour during this time. Power is supplied by Hamburg Energie and comes from 100% renewable resources.

Europa 2 is fitted with a selective catalytic converter system that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by almost 95% and was built for Energy Efficiency Design Index certification. Its CO2 emissions are 31% below target value.

All newly built ships in the Hapag-Lloyd Cruises fleet are equipped for use of cold ironing.

Voluntary use of MGO exclusively

The line has been voluntarily transitioning to use only marine gas oil so sulphur emissions will be cut by 80% and soot and particulates reduced by up to 30%. Routes are planned with an eco-efficient average speed; not pushing to go as fast as possible cuts fuel consumption by 30%.

‘We use marine gas oil with a low 0.1% sulphur content in the whole fleet, all over the world, thereby going beyond the legal requirements,’ said Karl J. Pojer, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. ‘Successful use of cold ironing is another important part of our environmental strategy.'
