Former Jalesh Cruises’ Karnika sold for scrap to NKD Maritime

The Court Marshall in Mumbai has awarded former Jalesh Cruises’ Karnika to NKD Maritime for recycling at an undisclosed price, after failing to meet its reserve price for trading.

The vessel, which is still anchored in Mumbai, will now move to Alang, India. 

Bankruptcy, arrest and stranded crew

Karnika had been due to recommence cruising this month, but rising debts and the financial impact of COVID-19 on cruise operations globally, led creditors to take action in March. 

Crew members appealed to India’s authorities for support in mid-October, while stuck on the vessel in ‘poor conditions’ as court proceedings were underway.

Jalesh Cruises - a start-up that had catered to the Indian domestic, as well as international source markets - purchased the ship from P&O Australia last year and renamed it from Pacific Jewel.
