AMSA suspended the search for the man, 84, based on expert medical advice regarding his survivability.

AMSA tasked its Essendon-based Dornier search and rescue aircraft and Sun Princess to search the area. CCTV footage from the ship showed the man entering the water from a height of approximately 84 meters.

Expert medical advice received by AMSA indicated the man was was very unlikely to have survived when he entered the water, given the height. The advice also indicated the man would not have been able to survive in the water for an extended period of time given his age, clothing and the weather conditions at the time of the incident. Sea conditions were rough, with 25 to 30-knot winds and swells up to three meters.

In consultation with the master of Sun Princess, the operating company and the next of kin, the search effort was concluded.
