After a pause of more than 2.5 years, Hobart welcomed the arrival of P&O Cruises Australia’s flagship Pacific Explorer on Tuesday.

‘It is a great source of pride that our homegrown cruise line P&O Cruises Australia is the first major cruise line to have a ship return to Tasmania,’ Marguerite Fitzgerald, president of Carnival Australia and P&O Cruises Australia, said.

Fitzgerald said 10 ships from six Carnival Australia brands will make 62 calls at Tasmanian destinations during the current (southern hemisphere) summer cruise season.

Businesses celebrate

‘Cruise ship visits are an important contributor to Tasmania’s visitor economy and many Tasmanian businesses are celebrating today’s arrival of the Pacific Explorer and the start of the 2022-23 cruise season,’ Tasmania Premier Jeremy Rockliff said.

Australian Cruise Association CEO Jill Abel, a Tasmanian, said passengers, crew and cruise line expenditure make a critical contribution to the economy.

‘Hobart has a long and positive relationship with the cruise lines as it is a safe deep-water port  with huge desirability by cruise passengers,’ Abel said.

Huge number of overnights

She said 25% of ships visiting Hobart this season will overnight in port, allowing passengers to go beyond the gateway cities and into regional areas.
