A moment of silence was observed at the site of Capt. Francesco Schettino's criminal trial in Grosseto. As expected, the legal proceeding was immediately adjourned due to a nationwide lawyers' strike.

Italian news service ANSA said Schettino, who is battling charges of manslaughter, shipwreck and abandoning ship, was not present but expressed his 'profound grief' and 'indelible sorrow.'

The commemoration on Giglio included a morning Mass, a solemn afternoon concert and a candelight procession to the waterfront. Bells and sirens were sounded at 9:45 p.m., the moment Costa Concordia hit the rocks on Jan. 13, 2012.
