Adora Magic City named in Shanghai
The first large China-built cruise ship, Adora Magic City, was named in Shanghai on Saturday as construction of a sister ship for Adora Cruises got underway.
Naming the vessel at Shanghai Waigaoqiao shipyard was Chinese archaeologist Fan Jinshi. An honorary dean and fellow at the Dunhuang Academy, she has dedicated over six decades to preserving and researching China's cultural heritage in Dunhuang, home to the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating to 366 AD.
Meanwhile, the construction of China’s second large cruise ship by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Corp. is underway. It follows the announcement at Seatrade Cruise Asia Pacific last month that widespread construction of large-scale cruise ships in China is on the horizon.
The past five years when Adora Magic City was being built allowed Adora Cruises to strengthen its operational capabilities that span sales, marketing and commercial operation, product design and development, hotel management, maritime operation and newbuild supervision.
The spirit of the Silk Road
Heritage specialist Jinshi regarded her role of ‘naming ambassador’ to the vessel on November 4 as an honour, and said the ‘beautiful ship is a vessel of rich Eastern and Western cultures, fostering cultural exchanges and preserving the spirit of the ancient Silk Road along the 21st-century maritime Silk Road.’
Key features
Due to commence international sailings from Shanghai Wusongkou Cruise Terminal on January 1, the 135,500gt Adora Magic City measures 323.6 mtr in length and has capacity for up to 5,246 passengers.
As well as housing 26 restaurants and bars, the ship features a brewery offering a wide variety of freshly brewed craft beers and has a vast duty-free retail space selling a range of products from world-renowned brands.
When it comes to entertainment, Adora Cruises has partnered with a leading Chinese comedy production company, Mahua FunAge, to introduce live comedy theater, while Bloks – the original Chinese building blocks brand – will establish AI-STEAM Exploration Camp at Sea to provide curricula, games, activities, competitions and a free play zone.
