The air sanitation system has been developed with Fincantieri designers and technicians in cooperation with the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology virology department. Located in Trieste, the Center supports businesses in developing technological solutions for the control of viruses.

Safe Air system

The system is based on UV-C lamps (type C ultraviolet rays), applied in combination with air conditioning systems. Air flow is radiated at source with a short wavelength light, hitting organic particles and preventing the circulation of air pollutants such as viruses, bacteria and mould.

MSC Sashore is due to enter into service in 2021.

Additional technologies

Other systems on board include selective catalytic reduction, to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 90%, and advanced wastewater treatment, as well as shore power capability, which will allow the ship to connect to local power grids while at berth, reducing air emissions.
