The groundbreaking ceremony for the future Hall 11 was attended by Genting Group's chairman and ceo Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern’s Federal State Minister for Economic Affairs Harry Glawe, Rostock’s senior mayor Roland Methling and MV Werften coo Holger Tepper.

MV Werften's construction hall will be 385mtr long, 99mtr wide and up to 24mtr high.

Centrepiece is a semi-automatic panel line, capable of welding panels measuring up to 25 x 16mtr.

The laser-hybrid technique offers high quality standards at less heat production, notes the yard. The hall will also house a new building line and a outfitting line.

Commissioning of the facility is scheduled for summer 2018. The Rostock site will then manufacture 80 large sections per ship for Star Cruises’ pair of 342mtr long Global Class ships due for delivery in 2020 and 2021.

Tepper noted the new facility will significantly increase MV Werften's steel fabrication capacity and thus also the group's productivity.

He said about 200 employees are going to work in the new complex from the opening, doubling by mid-term construction.

‘With this groundbreaking ceremony, MV Werften is taking the next step in its comprehensive investment programme for three shipbuilding sites in our federal state,’ said Minister Glawe. ‘Not only Rostock-Warnemünde, but also the sites in Stralsund and Wismar will profit from this expansion,’ he noted, adding ‘This is a good prospect for the entire maritime industry here in our state.’
