Phoenix Reisen’s Amadea to undergo engine retrofit for greener ops

Currently in Germany's port of Bremerhaven, Amadea will receive two medium-speed marine diesel engines, L250 and V250, which use advanced EGR technology to minimise formation of NOx during combustion, thus meeting IMO III and EPA Tier 4 emissions requirements.

VMS Group will manage the retrofit of the vessel - well-known in Germany for featuring in the television series Das Traumschiff – alongside C-Job Naval Architects and Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) Cruise Services.

‘In a time where most cruise companies are heavily in strain due to the corona pandemic, it speaks in the honour of Phoenix Reisen to make the decision to enhance their fleet by the retrofitting of the MS Amadea,’ said Bosse Berg, technical superintendent, BSM Cruise Services, which manages the vessel.

EGR Tech

Currently installed on several expedition cruise vessels, polar class ships and ferries, engines with EGR technology have lower system weight, lower installation cost, lower operating expenses and the requirement of up to 40 % less space, while reducing complexity of ship design.

Rob Van Solingen, European sales director - marine and stationary power, Wabtec, added, ‘The gensets are optimized in a way that minimizes both noise and vibration while being certified to IMO III emission levels without SCR and urea injection, and this will clearly attract even the most demanding projects.’

The vessel is scheduled to sail the Mediterranean and Norwegian fjords this summer.
