Sustainability, innovation feature in Fincantieri's 2023-27 business plan

Fincantieri aims to become a global leader in the development and lifecycle management of green and digital ships for cruise and other sectors.

According to its newly approved 2023-27 business plan, Fincantieri also intends to strengthen the group's international competitive positioning and that of the Italian shipbuilding industry, creating value for the entire supply chain.

To do this, it will strengthen synergies among cruise, defense and offshore businesses to benefit from the green transition and technological innovations.

Deliveries up to 2028

Within the cruise industry, Fincantieri remains the leader with more than 40% of the market share and 120 cruise ships built since 1990 — over a third of the global fleet. The group counts 28 cruise ships in its orderbook with deliveries into 2028.

As tourism recovers from the pandemic, Fincantieri sees a 'clear preference for cruises, at higher levels than 2019,' and new luxury niche operators entering the market. This will spur higher demand for the most innovative technological features and next-generation engines.

Pioneering new technologies

'Distinctiveness and sustainability are the defining traits of our new plan, allowing us to continuously grow by turning macroeconomic and sector related challenges into opportunities,' Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero said. He added Fincantieri will act as 'pioneers in developing new technologies in its three core businesses — cruise, defense and specialized offshore vessels.

The 2023-27 plan also entails a continuous effort to modernize and digitalize shipyards’ operations, according to Folgiero, 'up to outstanding levels, and the relentless pursuit of financial discipline and deleveraging.'
