The 160,000gt vessels are intended to become the backbone of the future TUI Cruises fleet.
They'll be built at Monfalcone shipyard and are scheduled for delivery in 2024 and in 2026.
Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises, and Luigi Matarazzo, general manager of the Merchant Ship Division of Fincantieri, were on hand at San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine) at Centro Servizi Navali, a company specialized in logistics and production of sheet metal for the Fincantieri yards located in northeastern Italy.
Prototype design
The design is based on a prototype project developed by Fincantieri to advance the TUI brand. Energy efficiency lies at the heart of the project, with the goal of reducing fuel consumption and minimizing environmental impact.
Biofuel possibility and thermal waste treatment
Fincantieri is studying the possibility enabling future operation with low-emission biofuels.
In addition, the ships will be equipped with improved catalytic converters (compliant with Euro 6 standard) and a shore power connection. They'll also have efficient and innovative waste management systems that can shred organic waste by means of thermal treatment.
