In reporting a €7m first-half profit on revenues of €3.04bn, up from a loss of €137m on revenues of €2.37bn in 2019, Fincantieri mentioned an order for the Somnio residential superyacht.

Fincantieri didn't give further details such as whether this is subject to financing. According to a launch announcement, Somnio is billing itself as the world's first 'yacht liner' at 223 meters/728 feet and 33,500gt.

39 spacious apartments

The vessel would have just 39 spacious apartments and sail an 'ever-changing global itinerary.'

It would be constructed at Vard for delivery in mid-2024.

'We are proud of having been selected to build this amazing yacht liner for Somnio,' said Attilio Dapelo, GM for Vard's cruise business. 'The vessel will be the largest vessel so far in Vard’s history and will engage a high number of designers and shipbuilders in Vard’s network of specialized international facilities.'

Erik Bredhe project lead

The project is being overseen by Somnio lead Capt. Erik Bredhe, a former marine operations director for The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and, before that, a master of The World, to date the only residential vessel in operation.

Tillberg Design of Sweden and the UK's Winch Design have been tapped as designers.

Somnio said the yacht liner will be finished to the highest standards with amenities reflecting the service and offering found only in the world’s finest hotels.

It added: 'The highest standards of security and medical care will also be available on board, enabling owners and their guests to sail with the highest level of safety during the midst of pandemics and other global risks.'

37bn order backlog

In other first-half financials, Fincantieri reported a backlog of 111 ships (including options) valued at a total of 37bn.
