Meyer RE, Damen team on ships' lifecycle sustainability through recycling

A joint cooperation agreement sees Damen Shiprepair & Conversion working with Meyer Group subsidiary Meyer RE on ships' lifecycle sustainability.

Ideally, this would be from their development and build to supporting them through their operating lives and end-of-life recycling.

Meyer RE has been active for nearly a year.

Securing dock capacity/manpower for customers worldwide

'Thanks to the cooperation with the family-owned, Dutch company Damen Ship Repair & Conversion Holding BV, we are moving even closer to our customers by securing dock capacity and manpower for our customers worldwide,' said Alexander Höfling, managing director of Meyer RE.

'In the short time since it was founded, Meyer RE has brought us additional work as customers want to make their ships more attractive and sustainable,' added Meyer Werft Managing Director Jan Meyer. 'It has generated orders across our group including our shipyards. However, as we do not have our own repair and docking capacities, this cooperation agreement with DSC is of particular importance to us as we now have access to the resources we need.'

Conversion for LNG, methanol, fuel cells, batteries

Meyer RE offers various services for shipping companies in close cooperation with other specialists within the Meyer Group and now with DSC. Initially the two groups will work on the design and implementation of sustainable systems up to the complete conversion and/or installation of new shipboard power plants, including LNG, methanol, batteries and fuel cell solutions, as well as implementing  entire modernization projects.

Ideal partner

Meyer Group called DSC an ideal partner, not least due to the proximity of a number of its yards and a shared philosophy and dedication to quality.

Damen Shiprepair and Conversion is a group of 10 repair yards with resources including dry docks up to 405 meters by 90 meters and 420 meters by 80 meters and a harbor and voyage team to service its customers at sea or in harbor. Most of the yards are very close to the main shipping routes. DSC completes more than 1,500 orders annually.

'We have serviced many cruise ships at our yards over the years, during which we have developed a detailed understanding of the technical and logistical needs of a cruise refit project,' said Jeroen Heesters, managing director of DSC. 'We look forward to working with Meyer RE.'
