Mivan secures over £1m of cruise refitting work

The larger of the two contracts, Pacific Dawn, will begin its joinery pre-fabrication stage in Mivan's factory during the spring. Working at Forgacs Shipyard in Brisbane, Australia, Mivan's outfitting team will be on board for around three weeks between May and June. The scope of the contract covers the fitting out of the Aqua Spa and the Salt Grill Restaurant.

This is Mivan's second recent contract for P&O Australia following Pacific Jewel. As with the Jewel, Mivan is again working from the designs of London-based SMC Design.

For Azura, under construction in Italy, Mivan will supply case goods to various retail outlets and the timber dance floor in the main atrium. Work takes place during the vessel’s voyage from Fincantieri’s Monfalcone yard to its home port of Southampton.

Mivan business development director Stephen Mills said, 'The cruise ship market is a sector that has remained consistent for us despite the global recession. Mivan will be exhibiting once again at Seatrade in Miami and we will be aiming to meet as many clients as possible throughout the week to monitor opportunities in the market during the next 12-18 months.'

Epoxy repair expert expands with workshops

Epoxy repair expert expands with workshops

To date, 12 workshops have been certified, and a workshop in Italy will be added to the list next month. Major cruise ports include Piraeus, Hamburg, Rio de Janeiro, St. John's, Dubai and Shanghai. The Danish company's goal is to have a certified workshop in all major repair ports around the world, says managing director John T. Nielsen. Another eight should be added in 2010.

Epoxy protects against wear and galvanic corrosion so, for example, repairing a seawater filter using this method will retrieve its initial durability and functionality and typically at a fraction of the cost of a new spare part, notes Nielsen. He adds it is much easier and faster to mount the refurbished part than adapt a new one.

In addition to workshops Wencon has a number of distributors and stock points around the world.

Eighteen new balconies were also incorporated onto existing staterooms and a Mongolian wok venue was added to the casual poolside restaurant. Bow-to-stern Wi-Fi access was enabled, as well.

The balconies went onto Spa Deck accommodations, creating 220sq ft verandah staterooms adjacent to Spa Carnival. With these newly reconfigured staterooms, nearly 40% of Carnival Glory’s 1,487 cabins now feature balconies.

The new Serenity adults-only retreat is located forward on Sun Deck and Sky Deck, with shaded loungers and hammocks, a full bar and two oversized whirlpools.

Circle ‘C’ for tweens provides high-tech sound and lighting system, plasma-screen televisions, a touch-screen jukebox and gaming pods.

In respect to dining, the Mongolian wok option was added to the Red Sail Lido Deck restaurant. Additionally, the forward Golden dining room was reconfigured for ‘Your Time Dining’ with open seating between 5:45 and 9:30 nightly.

The post-Panamax Carnival Glory entered service in 2003.

From February to May, the ship operates alternating weekly Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises. Carnival Glory will then be deployed to New York for four- and five-day Atlantic Canada voyages from early June to early September, followed by seven-day Canada/New England cruises through early October.

The renovations are part of the line’s $350m ‘Evolutions of Fun’ refurbishment program for its eight 70,000gt Fantasy-class vessels. Carnival Fascination is the sixth ship in the series to receive the upgrades.

The 1994-built vessel operates Jacksonville’s only year-round cruise schedule, carrying approximately 170,000 passengers annually.

‘The Fascination has proved to be a tremendous draw for cruise passengers from throughout the southeastern US with the ship typically sailing at 100% capacity,’ said JAXPORT ceo Rick Ferrin, adding that the new amenities will ‘refresh the experience for repeat customers and enhance the experience for first-time cruisers.’

Carnival Fascination’s open decks now feature a WaterWorks park including a 300ft twister slide, a pair of 82ft racing slides and a splash zone for kids. The Lido Deck pool was also renovated with a colorful tropical theme and gained oversized umbrellas, vibrant tile work, thatched roofing and huge stylized palm trees.

The 98 balconies were added to existing accommodations, creating 230sq ft balcony staterooms. Several suites were also retrofitted with larger balconies.

Another addition was the adults’ aft deck retreat, Serenity, with teak-style decking, colorful umbrellas and two large whirlpools.

New to the casual poolside restaurant are a Mongolian wok venue and a chicken rotisserie. The two main dining rooms were refurbished with fresh carpeting, upholstery and other cosmetic enhancements. One restaurant was also reconfigured for Your Time Dining with the option of open seating between 5:45 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
