RCCL addresses Antigua cabinet on port redevelopment

John's City Cruise Complex and its environs.

Royal Caribbean has made a commitment to work with the government of Antigua & Barbuda and its cruise partners in redeveloping downtown St. John's to handle the continued increase in visitor numbers.Tercek identified and laid out a comprehensive program that addresses multiple issues relative to cruise tourism, commerce and the local community.

He told the assembly there is great potential for the development of the St. John's waterfront, in particular, areas from the Fish Market south to the deep water commercial port with further concentration on the cruise-tourist areas of Redcliffe and Heritage Quays.

The development plans call for improved berthing facilities and an additional berth at the deep water harbour, improved signage, taxi dispatch and welcome centre, a yacht marina, a downtown boutique hotel, plus residential and entertainment facilities.

Miami-based architectural and planning firm Bermello, Ajamil & Partners Inc., retained by Royal Caribbean to conceptualize the master plan presented by Tercek at the session today, are 'serious about development,' he noted.

Tercek also emphasized the expanding cruise market, citing in particular the increase in Europeans cruising and the impending arrival of the Genesis ships, and said that Antigua has done a good job of managing the growth of its cruise- and land-based tourism but has outgrown its infrastructure.

Following the presentation Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer said he felt the 'opportunities [identified] far outweigh the challenges' and agreed that 'we need significant development in downtown St. John's.' He said he would look favourably at the proposal and the immediate next steps including a meeting with key players and a broad-based community consultation. TEAM building again in Venice

TEAM building again in Venice

Delivery will be in March 2009.

Two weeks ago VTP inaugurated another TEAM-build HYDRA bridge at Tagliamento quay during the maiden call of MSC Poesia. The latest contract includes an option for a third bridge.Last year TEAM also received a contract to modify and technically upgrade the passenger boarding structure which has been serving the cruise terminal on the Tagliamento quay for more than 12 years.

The bridge design in TEAM's HYDRA range has the capability to move along the entire length of the quay and connect with the entrance of the terminal and the various entrances of cruise ships. The cabin of the bridge is equipped with an integrated hydraulic, telescopic, docking ramp that, when attached to the side of a cruise ship automatically follows the vessel's movements and will immediately undock in the event of an emergency.

The Isonza quay installation brings to four the number of passenger boarding bridges supplied by TEAM to Italian ports (Venice and Savona). The Barcelona head-quartered company has supplied 17 PBBs in its HYDRA range (out a total 43) to cruise and ferry terminals worldwide.
