QM2 carries jewellery designed by stars for charity

The event at Bonham's has been organised by Cunard Line and youth charity The Prince's Trust, one of the benefiting charities.

Prince's Trust ambassador Sir Ben Kingsley will join others at the Bonham's preview on May 5 and will see jewellery and accessories designed by Goldie Hawn, Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Lopez; a pair of cuff-links designed by Kingsley for the collection; a 12-litre Balthazar and six-litre Methuselah of Moet & Chandon champagne signed by Colin Farrell, Susan Sarandon and Ricky Gervais and limited-edition posters for the Golden Globe Awards autographed by Brad Pitt, Jolie, Tom Hanks, Sigourney Weaver and Kate Winslet.

The collection is beginning an international tour and is currently on board Cunard's Queen Mary 2, arriving in Southampton tomorrow. The exhibits will return to New York to be shown at Bonham's on Madison Avenue on May 18, before being auctioned at Bonham's and Butterfields in Los Angeles on May 28.

Half the proceeds of the auction, organised by Los Angeles-based 'Stars For A Cause', will go to charities chosen by the participating stars, and the other half will go to youth charity The Prince's Trust, supported by Cunard.

Asia Pacific growing for Silversea

Asia Pacific growing for Silversea

'Business in the region has increased from 3% in 2003 to 15% last year, he noted. Odell said during this time of recession, it is important to remain focused. He reported Silversea is getting a higher proportion of repeat customers during this period and needs to work harder on getting newcomers.

The event, held on board Silver Shadow, was to introduce Ken Watson, Silversea's new evp and coo. One month into his new role Watson, who is responsible for worldwide sales and marketing operations and for overseeing the departments of revenue management and performance, reservations and air/sea, has clearly undertaken a crash course on the Silversea product, playing a competent guide during the ship tour.

Silver Shadow is currently sailing her 'Grand Pacific Voyage,' calling in Ho Chi Minh City after Singapore and then Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan over the next couple of weeks.

Costa Classicaapos;s Shanghai debut

Costa Classicaapos;s Shanghai debut

'The company's confidence and long-term commitment to the Chinese market is demonstrated not only by the decision to deploy 1,680-passenger Costa Classica in the region in 2009, but also by the recent announcement to replace Costa Allegra with the larger Costa Romantica at the beginning of April 2010,' said Pier Luigi Foschi, chairman and ceo of Costa.

Foschi added, 'We will continue to fulfill our responsibilities as a market pioneer as we enhance the development of Shanghai's positioning at the centre of shipping and transportation in China and to promote the development of the Chinese cruise economy.'

Costa is operating a variety of itineraries year-round from Shanghai, Tianjin and Hong Kong. In total the two ships will sail 36 cruises including 23 using Shanghai as a homeport.

'As the first international cruise company to enter the Chinese market, Costa Crociere has made a long-term, impressive commitment in this area,' said Lu Hai Hu, chairman, Shanghai Port International Group Co. Ltd.

'We are fully convinced that a growing number of Chinese tourists will become familiar with the concept of cruise holidays, and remarkable progress will be made in the cruise economy in China as a whole,' the port chief added.

To welcome Costa Classica to China, a grand opening ceremony named 'Timeless Classic Italy' was held at Shanghai's cruise terminal including an appearance by international film star Shu Qi. The crowd cheered as she used a golden axe to cut the cable signifying the start of the maiden voyage.

'I experienced a memorable week on board Costa Cruises when filming "If You Are the One" last year,' Shu Qi said.

Lines initiate uniform H1N1 virus screening

Lines initiate uniform H1N1 virus screening

Under the new protocol, passengers must complete and sign a written form prior to embarking a CLIA member line ship anywhere in the world.

The standardized, global precautions are being undertaken because the swine flu virus has moved beyond Mexico. Earlier this week, the World Health Organization noted the virus is already widespread.

Under the CLIA lines' enhanced screening protocol, a secondary screening will be conducted if a passenger reports flu-like symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose or sore throat. Medical personnel at each line will decide, on a case by case basis, whether to allow boarding.

Passengers will not be permitted to travel if they exhibit influenza-like-illness or meet the suspect case conditions for H1N1 as defined by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The cruise industry instituted similar global screening protocols in the past during the outbreak of SARS in Asia.

G.A.P Adventuresapos; Expedition starts operations

G.A.P Adventuresapos; Expedition starts operations

One hundred percent owned and operated by Toronto-based G.A.P Adventures, the expedition ship was delivered from STX Europe's Rauma yard on Monday following a $15m refit. She was due to sail two itineraries in the Azores but one was cancelled due to engine failure.

Expedition will be one of the first polar vessels to be fully 2010 compliant with the new International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) environmental recommendations, according to Gareth Hamilton, marketing manager UK/Europe G.A.P.

A planned launch event in Portsmouth on April 30 has been postponed to September due to a slight delay in her arrival in the UK yesterday. She will be calling UK following her high Arctic itineraries and prior to sailing to South America.

Passengers for the upcoming polar departures are predominantly from North America and the UK, Hamilton reports. The ship is equipped with 12 Mark V Zodiacs enabling the full complement of passengers to take part in expedition trips such as to iceberg alley in Antarctica and the bird cliffs of Alkhornet in Spitsbergen.

The ship replaces Explorer which sank in Antarctica on November 23, 2007, without loss of life. A Liberian flag state report on the sinking released last month and reported on Seatrade Insider revealed a host of issues, from the captain's lack of Antarctic experience to the adequacy of shell plating thickness rules for older ships to the jurisdiction of search and rescue coordination.
