New Love Boat sails from San Francisco

The new Pacific Princess takes on the name of the ship featured prominently in 'The Love Boat' television series, after the original vessel was retired from the Princess fleet last fall.

Actor Gavin MacLeod, who played Captain Stubing on the show, was aboard the 670-passenger ship as it sailed under the Golden Gate bridge to its new summer home. Pacific Princess is operating 10 departures of a 11-day Inside Passage itinerary roundtrip from San Francisco that includes calls at Victoria or Vancouver, Ketchikan or Sitka, Skagway and Juneau, plus scenic cruising of Tracy Arm and the twin Sawyer Glaciers.

The ship will also offer Princess customers a selection of South Pacific voyages before it returns to the P&O Australia fleet in the autumn.

Caribe will be dedicated mainly to the French and Italian markets (more than 50% of the ship alloted to France), with a Corsair charter flight from Paris.

However Caribe's entire season was cancelled last November, 'due to the critical international tourism situation,' said Festival at that time.

A summit of Commonwealth of Independent States leaders will take placeon the ship, which is currently moored at the English Embankment on the NevaRiver.

Russian President Vladimir Putin personally authorized the charter of the28,000gt Silver Whisper to be used for the festivities in the historic Russian city this week, Silversea Cruises said. The ship will be docked inSt. Petersburg during the three days of tricentennial celebrations andwill serve as the setting for a number of international VIPs and celebrities. The highlightof the events will be a gala dinner hosted by President Putin.

Seventh crewman dies, NCL cancels sailings

The Philippines native was an eight-year veteran of Norwegian Cruise Line who had worked solely on the Norway, the company said.

Nine crew members remain hospitalized. Two crew were discharged on Thursday and one was taken off the critical list and is resting in serious but stable condition, NCL reported. One crew member remains on the critical list.

NCL canceled the Norway's June 15 and 22 sailings as the National Transportation Safety Board continues its investigation of the May 25 boiler explosion. Passengers will receive a full refund.

Kuoni generates around 1,000 passengers a year from France for Hurtigruten cruises. Two crewmembers were discharged fromthe hospital and are being accommodated by NCL at localhotels near the hospital.

The most recent victim to succumb was JamaicanWinston Lewis, a second steward in the hotel department who worked for NCLfor 31 years. NCL also released the names of the other crewmembers who losttheir lives: Ramil Bernal and Candido Valenzuela, stokers in the engineroom, both from Cavite, Philippines; Ricardo Rosal, third engineer in theengine department, also from Cavite; Rene Villaneuva, an oiler, from Manila;and Mari John Bautista, first assistant refrigeration engineer from Manila.

Silversea Cruises pulled the ship fromservice due to the downturn in travel after 9/11. While on hiatus, SilverWind underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation that added a 40-seatalternative dining room, a wine and cigar room. In addition, the fitnesscenter was moved into the space previously occupied by an underusedobservation lounge and expanded to include a 'Tranquility Room' with chaisesand couches. The new Saletta restaurant will feature some dishes contributedby Relais Gourmands, the cuisine-oriented division of Relais & Chateaux;reservations are recommended but there's no additional cover charge. SilverWind's sister ship, Silver Cloud, will get a similar renovation when itleaves the fleet from October to April 2004.

RCI confirms New York cruises

This is the first time a 142,000gt Voyager-class ship will sail outside of the Caribbean. The Voyager will alternate five-night Canada cruises with nine-night Caribbean voyages.

The Canada itinerary includes Halifax, Nova Scotia, and St. John, New Brunswick,while the Caribbean ports of call are Labadee, the line's private beach onHaiti; Ocho Rios; Georgetown and Freeport. The new program starts May 16 andcontinues through October 22, 2004.
