Double-digit earnings boost in TUI Group's cruise segment

Luxury expedition ships Hanseatic Nature and Hanseatic Inspiration are due to join the fleet in 2019
TUI Group reported 2018 cruise segment earnings of €324m before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization, a nearly 27% increase from 2017, on turnover of €901.9m, a 10.7% increase.

Average rate rises across all three cruise brands

Cruise investments are paying off with capacity and earnings growth. At TUI Cruises, the average rate was €178, up from €173 the prior year, with occupancy of 100.8%, slightly down from 101.9%. Marella Cruises' average rate rose to £141 from £131, and occupancy was 100.9% compared to 101.7%. Average rate at Hapag-Lloyd Cruises €615, up from €594, while occupancy edged up to 78.3% from 76.7%.

In May, the new Mein Schiff 1 joined TUI Cruises’ fleet, while the new Mein Schiff 2 is scheduled for February introduction. Marella Explorer was introduced in 2018, with Marella Explorer 2 to join in 2019. At Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, luxury expedition newbuilds Hanseatic Nature and Hanseatic Inspiration are set for delivery in 2019.

'Perfectly positioned' for strong expedition cruise growth

The TUI Group noted the expedition cruise segment is delivering strong growth around the world and considers Hapag-Lloyd Cruises 'perfectly positioned as one of the top players in the luxury and expedition cruise sector.'

The 'successful hotel and cruise business will be strengthened,' CEO Fritz Joussen said.
