Royal Caribbean International's Vision of the Seas began its seasonal homeport service from the Port of Galveston this week with a five-day western Caribbean cruise.

'Vision of the Seas will be good for the island and the port since it strengthens Royal Caribbean's commitment to Galveston and the Texas and Midwestern US cruise market,' interim port director Peter Simons said.

Vision of the Seas joins the largest cruise ship operating from Texas, Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas.

The line has scheduled 35 four- and 5-day cruises from Galveston during the 2017/18 winter season. They'll visit ports including Cozumel, Puerto Costa Maya and Progreso.

These new cruises will result in an estimated additional 80,000 passengers embarking on cruises from Galveston.

The Port of Galveston handles more than 1.7m revenue passengers annually. Carnival Cruise Line and Disney Cruise Line also sail from the island.
