Fire is on a Caribbean ferry—not a cruise ship
Rescuers are on site as passengers and crew evacuate a ferry that caught fire early this morning as it neared San Juan on an overnight trip from Santo Domingo. The vessel, Caribbean Fantasy, is a ferry—not a cruise ship, as some media are erroneously reporting.

The confusion is likely due to the name: America Cruise Ferries.

US Coast Guard Sector Southeast said the fire reportedly started in the engine room. According to the Puerto Rico Police's official Twitter account, @PRPDNoticias, Caribbean Fantasy is carrying approximately 512 people. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

As per the ferry operator's website schedule, Caribbean Fantasy would have been due to arrive in San Juan at 8 this morning after departing Santo Domingo at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The ferry was built in 1989, acquired by America Cruise Ferries in 2010 and has capacity for cargo, 60 cars and 1,050 passengers.
