Lloyd Werft refurbs four cruise ships in 1H 2017, prepares for Crystal Symphony arrival

Genting-owned Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven undertook repair work on four cruise ships in the first half of the year, with work being undertaken ahead of redeployment to northern Europe.

AIDAvita drydocked at the end of March for the first time in the shipyard’s Kaiserdock II for ten days for routine technical classification and maintenance work. Numerous jobs were also undertaken in the vessel’s public areas.

Work also included a new hull coating - a task which required about 9,000 litres of paint. The ship’s bow thrusters and both propeller drives were inspected as were the side-mounted hull stabilisers. The ship’s davits were inspected and lifeboats underwent servicing at the Fassmer Shipyard in Berne at the same time.

Almost simultaneously, 135.1mtr long Minerva was undergoing general maintenance and class work in Floating Dock III.

April saw National Geographic Explorer paying her fifth docking visit to Bremerhaven. The 112mtr long ship arrived straight after a voyage of several weeks from the Antarctic for routine maintenance and class work. It was carried out by Lloyd Werft personnel in the Floating Dock VI of neighbouring German Dry Docks (GDD).

During the same month, Plantours Kreuzfahrten’s 144mtr long Hamburg headed into dock for maintenance and class work at Floating Dock 5 at German Dry Docks – undertaken by specialists from Lloyd Werft.

The shipyard, which has belonged to the Malaysian Genting Group since 2015, has been focussing on the building and conversion of yachts and special prototype vessels as well as in the conversion of cruise ships.

During the second half of 2017, Crystal Symphony is expected to undergo a major enhancement at Lloyd Werft between mid September and October 20. Initial preparations for the work, which includes full open-seating dining and more suites, will begin on September 19 when the ship begins her journey to Bremerhaven after ending a cruise in Lisbon.

During the four week conversion period the ship will get two new restaurants and some of the penthouse suites will be converted, reducing passenger capacity to 848.
