Wood will take up the role from February. His focus will be managing a safe harbour, in addition to working alongside the Cowes Harbour Commission (CHC) board and senior leadership team to help deliver its five-year strategic plan (2022-27), which lists ensuring the port is ‘safe,’ ‘busy’ and the ‘destination of choice,’ among its aims.
Gary Hall, chief executive of CHC, who Wood will be reporting in to, said, ‘I am looking forward to working with him and developing on the solid foundations that Ed Walker has put in place during his time at CHC as well as the implementation of our new strategic plan for the harbour.’
Added CHC Chair Phil Hagen, ‘It is an exciting time to be joining Cowes Harbour with interesting projects being planned and delivered through our five-year strategy and the commissioners look forward to welcoming captain Wood in due course.’
30 years’ experience
Wood is a master mariner with over 30 years of experience with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary who has gained extensive know-how of piloting, ship handling and dredgers during the past seven years. According to CHC, he has ‘what it takes to instil a “Beyond Zero” safety culture,’ and being a Cowes resident, ‘understands the importance of the harbour in the economic prosperity of both East and West Cowes.’
Wood said, ‘I am proud to have been selected to become the new harbour master for Cowes and I look forward to working with the CHC team and key stakeholders on the safe management of the harbour.’
