MSC Cruises' 2022 Sustainability Report shows progress in all areas of the line’s Sustainability Action Plan.

The Sustainability Action Plan is focused on six priority areas which align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aims.

The Sustainability Advisory Board for the cruise division of MSC Group, which includes MSC Cruises, is chaired by Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago. The board is responsible for ensuring continued relevance of the sustainability strategy and for reviewing progress, guided and supported by the sustainability team.

‘To ensure the appropriateness and continued relevance of our sustainability strategy and our Sustainability Action Plan, we are in ongoing dialogue with our employees, guests and key external stakeholders,’ explained Linden Coppell, VP sustainability & ESG, MSC Cruises.

‘Through this listening exercise, we can ensure that our current focus areas are appropriate and identify any new areas as they arise, while we closely monitor the progress on the six key pillars of our action plan.’

MSC’s sustainability strategy is informed by a materiality assessment carried out in 2019 and revisited in 2021.

Components of the 2022 report, showing progress in all areas, include:

Planet

Transitioning to net zero emissions, improving local air quality, and scrutinising resource use and waste. In 2022, the line introduced its first LNG-powered cruise ship, MSC World Europa.

Place

Supporting sustainable destinations and developing terminals.

The company’s investments in developing new sustainable cruise terminals create jobs and bring new visitors to destinations. MSC works with Cruise Lines International Association and other cruise lines to manage visitor numbers and support sustainable tourism aspirations of destinations visited.

People

MSC maintains robust hygiene practices, has a comprehensive safety management system in place and aims to identify risks so it can act before incidents occur. It provides training and supports career progression and crew well-being.

Procurement

The line’s Sustainable Procurement Committee in 2022 initiated a comprehensive review of its procurement processes and practices to identify opportunities to improve its sustainability performance. MSC said it aims to go beyond specific programmes, such as eliminating single-use plastics onboard, and shift the mindset of its buyer community so that every purchasing decision is made with the environment and worker well-being in mind.
