Cunard’s Queen Victoria paid a maiden visit to Kiel on Tuesday which sparked a special Queens Day event at Ostseekai Cruise Terminal for the cruise line and its passengers and local community.

A Queens Village was erected at the terminal with stalls selling cruise related memorabilia and regional food and beverages. Among the afternoon highlights a Champagne Tea, which took place on a 70mtr long sofa.

The official plaque and key ceremony was attended by City president Hans-Werner Tovar, the md of the Port of Kiel Dr Dirk Claus and Captain Simon Love and Cunard Germany md Anja Tabarelli.

‘It is a great honour for me to welcome Queen Victoria on her maiden visit to Kiel,’ said Tovar. ‘I am also delighted that so many people are able to take part in the Queens Village event. I also welcome the fact that Cunard is donating the proceeds from the Champagne Tea to the Kieler Förde Hospice,’ he added.

740 mainly German-speaking guests disembarked Queen Victoria on July 17 having embraked nine days ago in Hamburg. Meanwhile  760 new passengers embarked in Kiel either to sail on a short three-day cruise back to Southampton or stay onbaord to join the ensuing Mediterranean cruise.

‘Kiel is not only the ideal start and destination port for German-speaking cruise ship clientele but also a tourist destination for international passengers in transit,’ said Claus. ‘I am very pleased at the way Cunard has so successfully combined the two,’ he added.

In 2019, Queen Victoria will visit Kiel twice on May 9 and July 25.

Kiel expects 165 visits by 32 different cruise ships this year. By the end of the season, it is expected that some 600,000 cruise passengers will have embarked on or disembarked at the port’s berths.
