MSC Cruises elevates coronavirus precautions fleetwide

MSC Cruises outlined immediate stepped-up precautions against coronavirus across its global fleet.

The line — which said no cases have been reported aboard its 17 ships — had undertaken a series of actions starting Jan. 24. Due to the latest coronavirus developments, MSC on Thursday implemented additional measures to secure the health and well-being of passengers and crew.

Denied boarding to travelers via mainland China

Passengers of all nationalities are required to fill out a pre-embarkation questionnaire to ensure no one boards their ship who has traveled from mainland China or visited mainland China in the past 30 days. Anyone who has traveled from mainland China or visited mainland China in the past 30 days will be denied access to the ship.

 Mandatory pre-embarkation screening

Mandatory non-touch thermal scans will be conducted for all passengers and crew prior to embarkation for every cruise MSC operates anywhere in the world, and persons with signs or symptoms of illness such as fever (38° C/100.4° F or higher) or feverishness, chills, cough or difficulty breathing will be denied embarkation.

In addition, MSC is elevating sanitation on all its ships.

Isolation for anyone who develops fever

Travelers who come down with fever symptoms will be isolated in their stateroom along with their close contacts, including those staying in the same stateroom and family members, as well as any crew member who served them.

Passengers and crew who traveled last week from mainland China were already screened for symptoms upon embarkation and were requested to report any symptoms of illness to the on-board medical center.

MSC said it has been consulting international and local health authorities to follow their advice and recommendations to guard against coronavirus transmission.

Also on Thursday, the company canceled three more short cruises from Shanghai on MSC Splendida and moved its 'grand voyage' embarkation port from Shanghai to Singapore.
