Uruguay, which has handled 204 cruise calls at Montevideo and Punta del Este during the November to April season, also hopes to draw cruisers to Colonia del Sacramento.

The 204 calls constitute the highest number of cruises arriving to Uruguay in the last eight years, reflecting the top-class services the country offers lines from around the world, Tourism Vice Minister Remo Monzeglio said.

Monzeglio will lead a delegation of public and private sector representatives to Seatrade Cruise Global later this month.

The Ministry of Tourism has attended Seatrade for years to promote the country and its ports and destinations with the aim of attracting more cruisers, thus stimulating investment.

UNESCO World Heritage Site

According to the Ministry, its goals at the upcoming convention are to maintain or increase cruise calls next season, entice more lines to Uruguay and draw visits to Colonia del Sacramento, with its historic quarter that's designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Ministry also seeks to promote the 9th Regional Convention of Cruise and River Cruise Tourism, Aug. 18-19 in Montevideo.

Along with the Ministry, the 11 other Uruguayan participants at Seatrade will include the National Ports Administration, the Montevideo and Maldonado municipalities, Pedro Santana, Buemes DMC Uruguay, Furlong Incoming Uruguay, JR Williams, South Atlantic Ship Suppliers, Jetmar Travel Agency, Repremar and Carrasco Traslada.
